SmartNet-Pro vs SmartNet-100: What’s the difference?

  • 12th Aug 2024

When it comes to fire detection and alarm systems, SmartNet-Pro and SmartNet-100 stand out for their user-friendly, 100% wireless capabilities which eliminate the need for complex cabling and reduce installation times significantly. Furthermore, both systems are EN 54 certified and BS 5839-1 compliant, ensuring they meet the highest safety standards.

One great system

Both systems are built on a patented self-forming, self-healing mesh network that enhance reliability and robustness whilst being twenty times faster to install than wired systems. The powerful mesh network and sensitive radio receiver reduce the need for radio surveys, speed-up installation and provide a permanent solution for built environments. Additionally, both systems have no requirement for wired boosters, translators, or any other wired elements, simplifying installation with minimal disruption. Both systems are designed with the renowned and patented Cygnus wireless mesh protocol, providing high performance across multiple frequency channels.

SmartNet-Pro and SmartNet-100 are both compatible with Cygnus ALERT remote notification and monitoring platform, a cloud-based solution to strengthen site safety. Using Cygnus ALERT, integrators and site administrators can receive event, fault or mesh information in real-time, enabling swift responses to on-site situations.

Furthermore, both systems are enhanced by the Cygnus Mesh Analyser, an enhanced diagnostic tool with a graphical display of mesh signal strengths and connection paths for each device in the system. Additionally, the Mesh Analyser can show the history of how the devices have joined the network and their previous connections to the network, with the capability to download a PDF report which outlines the health of the network and suggested actions which can strengthen it.

Two stand-out ranges

While SmartNet-Pro and SmartNet-100 share many core features, they cater to different scales of application and which fire detection and alarm system is best suited to an installation depends on its requirements.

SmartNet-Pro provides a scalable solution with the capability for 511 devices and up to 96 zones to operate on one SmartNet panel. Up to 5 SmartNet panels can be networked together, allowing SmartNet-Pro to provide a solution of up to 2555 devices. The scalability aspect of SmartNet-Pro whilst maintaining minimal disruption, is well suited to a range of applications like power stations such as Heysham Power Station and high rise buildings such as a high rise building in Scotland.

Whilst SmartNet-Pro caters to the larger scales of application, SmartNet-100 provides all the key benefits of SmartNet-Pro in a more cost-effective solution, designed to support a maximum of 100 devices. Based on this nature, SmartNet-100 is best suited for small to medium sized applications where the scalability of the SmartNet-Pro is not required, like shooting lodges such as Wellington College and adult hospices, such as Treetops Hospice.

Choosing between SmartNet-Pro and SmartNet-100 depends largely on your specific requirements and size of application. For larger applications which require advanced features, or for businesses which may foresee the need for scalability, SmartNet-Pro is worth the investment for its flexibility. If you have a small to medium sized application, the SmartNet-100 is a cost-effective solution.

Cannon Fire & Security, as Cygnus Academy trained installers, have experience of installing both SmartNet systems, with SmartNet-100 at Charles Pugh Glass and SmartNet-Pro at Johnsons Cleaners. Both installations involved updating fire alarm systems based on fire risk assessments, but each system was tailored to the specific needs of the respective buildings. Dominic Gundry-White comments “Cygnus are our standard wireless option to customers and being able to offer both SmartNet-100 and SmartNet-Pro fire alarms allows us to deliver both cost-effective and scalable options, ensuring that each customer gets the right system for their specific requirements."

Both SmartNet-Pro and SmartNet-100 are EN 54 certified, 100% wireless fire detection and alarm systems which have their unique strengths, and understanding your own installation requirements will allow our sales consultants to provide you with the right choice for your application.
