We have launched two new tools to aid the planning and ongoing maintenance of the EN 54 certified 100% wireless fire detection and alarm system, SmartNet.
The new Site Survey kit has been designed to help with the planning and deployment of the SmartNet system whilst the Portal Programming Unit (PPU) allows installers to deliver firmware and configuration updates to devices wirelessly.
Cygnus’ Site Survey kit
The Site Survey kit allows installers to deploy three bespoke detectors that replicate the mesh network to ensure the suitability of the system for the environment. It is particularly helpful in areas of high attenuation e.g. thick walls or steel enclosed buildings, or L5 category systems ensuring that installations are optimised from the start and that a strong and secure mesh, with in-built redundancy, is available at the design stage.
By ensuring that the wireless sensor network is set up for maximum reliability and efficiency, it saves time during installation and on future call outs. During the site survey, the Cygnus team will demonstrate the signal strengths between the control panel and devices and a visual indicator will confirm the connection via multiple paths, providing guidance to the correct number of devices and their location throughout the site.

An excellent addition
The Site Survey kit adds to the Cygnus Mesh Analyser and Cygnus ALERT monitoring and notification platform as tools to aid the commissioning and on-going maintenance of the fire detection and alarm system. The Cygnus Mesh Analyser software provides an overview of a SmartNet fire detection and alarm system network, delivering a graphical display of mesh signal strengths and connection paths for each device in the system. It also suggests actions to enhance the performance of the system. Cygnus ALERT notification and monitoring platform is a cloud-based solution to strengthen site safety. Using Cygnus ALERT, integrators and site administrators can receive event, fault or mesh information in real-time, enabling swift responses to on-site situations.
Portal Programming Unit (PPU)
The PPU allows installers to run firmware updates and update device configurations wirelessly while they are on site, making the whole process faster and more efficient for areas that are hard to access. The installer simply selects the devices that need to be updated, which are then dropped into a programming mode, and updated before rejoining the main mesh network seamlessly.
