Cygnus is on a journey to reduce its carbon emissions and eliminate its impact on climate change, with the objective of being carbon neutral by 2030
The Cygnus Sustainability Promise stems from the heart of the organisation. We are dedicated to the long-term health of our planet through excellent environmental practices. Over time, we will reduce the energy we consume and
secure energy supply from sustainable sources, by doing so we make a promise to achieve zero carbon by 2030.
We are changing the way we work. We are focusing our business development on greener and more sustainable products and services. Cygnus is leading the way in the market in driving sustainability initiatives to create a zero carbon fire safety industry.
On this journey, we want to help our customers achieve their sustainability goals too – through the products we manufacture and the services we provide.
How can we help
Cygnus’ sustainable safety strategy has seven key elements all focused together
to create a zero carbon business by 2030. These include:
Local Manufacturing
Cygnus is committed to manufacturing products in-house. All of its products are manufactured in our production facility in Hereford and have recently been given a Made in Britain protected collective mark. This approach also allows us to avoid unnecessary transportation costs.
Sourcing
Our manufacturing is done following the principles of lean processes which minimise waste and the excessive movement of raw materials, work in progress and finished inventory. Raw materials and components are sourced from local suppliers whenever possible.
Installation Time
Cygnus products are fully wireless and can be installed quickly, often taking less than a quarter of the installation time of a hard-wired system. This, in turn, reduces the carbon impact of multiple journeys to and from site.
Materials
Also, fewer materials are required to install the system with no need for wires, trunking or firestopping. Again, helping to ensure installation is quick and easy. Power tools are also rarely required for the installation of the Cygnus system,
further reducing the carbon impact.
Energy Sourcing
Cygnus is committed to ensuring all the electricity it sources will be 100% renewable by 2030 and, at the same time, is phasing out the use of natural gas to heat its buildings. In the meantime, Cygnus is offsetting emissions by sponsoring environmental initiatives such as reforestation
Energy Consumption
We are also working hard to reducing our energy consumption. We ensure equipment and appliances are powered down when not in use, and empty buildings are not being heated. Our buildings are also thermally insulated to the
highest standards to minimise the energy needed to keep them at an acceptable working temperature.
As well as moving to hybrid and electric vehicles, Cygnus aims for its fleet to be carbon zero before 2030.
Remanufacturing
Cygnus already has a range of products and services designed to reduce waste and maximise recycling. For instance, SmartNet features no single use materials such as rubber, metal or plastic, meaning that it doesn’t need to be disposed of at the end of its life, rather, it can be upgraded or recycled. The business is committed to re-manufacturing products when it is safe and practical to do so.
“We are on a journey to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2030. The directors and management team are focused on taking incisive action to protect the planet now and for future generations. We are taking positive action to reduce the environmental impact of our business through a range of initiatives, not least changing the way we work and the products and services we deliver to also reduce our clients’ carbon footprint”
